Introduction to Public Policy Analysis

Description: Preparing students to understand the basic concepts used in the analysis of public policies and in the study of the main phases of their cycle: agenda, formulation, implementation and evaluation. The applicability of the concepts will be demonstrated through studies of public security policies. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to use the analytical tools of political science to analyze any type of sectoral policy, with emphasis on public security policies

Introduction to Governance of Security

Description: Introduce students to the advanced debates about how security is demanded and provided in contemporary societies. The discipline presents and discusses three topics: i) the emergence of the State and its role in the promotion of security; (ii) the revival of private security and community involvement in the crime control; and iii) the role of military and private security companies in contemporary wars and conflicts. At the end of the course students are expected to be familiar with the ongoing debates about transformations in the field of security and to be able to identify and analyze such transformations within specific social contexts.

Public Policy Analysis

Description: This course continues the program of Introduction to Public Policy Analysis offered at undergraduate level. The aim is put students in contact with some of the main theoretical models used in the analysis of the formulation, implementation, stability and change of public policies. The applicability of theories and concepts will be demonstrated through studies of public security policies. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to use the main theoretical models used in the field of Public Policy Analysis to study any type of sector policy, with emphasis on public security policies.

Governance of Security

Description: This course continues the Introduction to Security Governance program offered at undergraduate level. The aim is put students in contact with some debates about transformations in how security is promoted in contemporary societies. The discussion will focus on (i) the descriptions, explanations and implications of involving multiple actors – state and non-state; formal and informal; national and transnational; territorial and non-territorial – in the provision and sponsorship of security; and (ii) theories on security governance in democratic societies. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to understand and analyze phenomena such as the mercadization of public security, community governance of crime control, and the role of private security companies and private military companies in the contemporary world.
